Hi, I'm Pranav
Every Friday, I share my process, thoughts, stories, ideas, and weekly recommendations. We're a community of 160+ curious people reading these newsletters.
Last week, I finished reading 12 and a Half by Gary Vee. It’s a good book. In the book, he describes some of the traits that led to his success and happiness over the years. Emotional intelligence is the key to having. In this book, he has mentioned essential 12 and a Half skills everyone should have. There are skills like gratitude, self-awareness, accountability, optimism, empathy, kindness, tenacity, curiosity, patience, conviction, humility, ambition and kind candor.
From this, I’ll share 4 key takeaways and the ones I resonated the most with. BTW, if you want the whole book summary, Gary has made a slide deck summary of the whole book. You can check it here.
My key takeaways
#1 Gratitude
I have learned this over the years, be happy for whatever you have. Be grateful for it.
In the book, he says, “The quality of being thankful; readiness to show appreciation for and to return kindness.”
When I started creating content on YouTube in 2021, I saw a lot of videos of the best equipment of other creators and started dreaming of having such a big setup. I started creating videos with my phone and also edited them.
Then I stumbled upon a video about gratitude and realized I had the best equipment to make content and that was my phone. I could do a lot with it.
I created the first few videos all with my mobile. I didn’t have a laptop to edit or to make thumbnails. However, I learned the basics of video editing and making thumbnails on Canva, both on my phone.
If I hadn’t started making videos back then, I think I wouldn’t have been here.
#2 Kindness
This is one of the best things I learned from my parents. It’s being friendly and kind to others.
However people behave with us, be kind towards them. We don’t know what others are going through.
Also, Gary says that people who are kind to themselves, tend to be kind to others.
It has helped me to be calm and happy. It’s like if you are kind to others, most of them will be kind to you.
#3 Humility
This is also one of the best skills I have learned from my parents. They told me, that whatever things you do in life, whatever awards you win or good things you do, be humble and not brag about it.
In the book, Gary says, not to put yourself on a pedestal and follow your curiosities, you’re accountable for your mistakes, and no matter what, you are just getting started. There’s a lot to learn in the journey. Remember where you came from.
“For all those with big ambitions and big conviction, remember that humility is the trait to balance you out”
- Gary Vee
#4 Curiosity
This resonated with me a lot. When I was thinking of a name for my YouTube channel, I had a habit of noting down words that I didn’t know the meaning of. One of the words was Inquisitive. I heard Steve Jobs say being a storyteller is important. I thought I loved listening and telling stories, so I kept my channel’s name ‘An Inquisitive Storyteller’.
I love learning new things every day and love asking questions. It has helped me a lot in learning.
“When people lack curiosity, they dismiss new opportunities instead of taking the time to explore them.”
– Twelve and a Half
