I have fallen in love with Pune. As I told you in my last newsletter, I have spent 9-10 years in Pune. It was one of my favourite days.
I have travelled to many places and stayed in 3-4 places, but there’s a different kind of connection between Pune and me.
Here are 5 reasons I love Pune:
#1 Great Weather
Pune has good weather throughout the year. The summers are bearable, and winters are awesome but it is the monsoon that Punekar talks about with pride.
The weather is present, less pollution and lots of greenery. Well I am not only comparing it with Delhi, but Pune has its own charm
#2 Lots of Mountains and hills
I love being in nature and I love trekking. Since Pune lies in the Western Ghats, there are many hills in Pune and in the outskirts of Pune. There are many places like Sinhgad, Vetal Tekdi, Parvati Hill, Kaas Plateau, etc
During the Rainy season, the hills become a lot greener.
#3 Growing Startup Culture
Pune is home to about 3,200 startups. It’s about two per cent of India’s tech startups are based in Pune. It received funding worth $1 Billion(Rs 6,653 crore) through 132 equity deals between 2014 and 2018. The hottest sectors include agritech, health tech, automotive technology, deep tech, software, and analytics. Here’s an article to read about this
Here are a few startups from Pune:
Druva (SaaS)
AgroStar (agritech)
FirstCry (eCommerce)
ElasticRun (logistics tech)
Think School (education)

#4 Great History
In the 17 or 18th century, there has been the rise of the Maratha empire and Peshwas. And Pune played a major role in the history of the Maratha empire. Two such examples are Shivaji and Peshwas.
Shivaji Maharaj is known as the founder of the Maratha empire. Kondana or Sinhagad played a major role in it. Shivaji Maharaj had lost almost all his forts, Sinhagad too. But they invaded it and got it back. Today Sinhagad is one of the glories of Pune.
Also, Shaniwar Wada of Peshwas played an important role in the past
#5 Cultural Capital of Maharashtra
Pune is the cultural capital of Maharashtra.
Pune symbolizes an indigenous Marathi culture and ethos, in which education, arts and crafts, and theatres are given due prominence. It is the birthplace of the poet-saint Tukaram (in Dehu) and Jnaneshvara (in Alandi), the author of the well-known commentary ‘Jnaneshwari’, on the “Bhagavad Gita”. It is the home of great freedom fighters like Bal Gangadhar Tilak, Agarkar and Gopal Krishna Gokhale. Jayant Narlikar, a famous contemporary scientist, is from Pune. Pune is the seat of North Indian Classical music. Annually, in the month of December, it hosts a three-night-long cultural program of vocal and instrumental classical music, called “Savai-Gandharva”.Pune has been an example of the blending of culture and heritage with modernisation and its side effects.
