Hello 👋 Pranav here
Every Friday, I share my process, my thoughts, stories and ideas from books, the internet and life and some weekly recommendations
Welcome to 2 new curious readers who joined us last week. Currently, we are 87 curious people reading these newsletters every week.
In the last newsletter, I spoke about how I went to Mono Acting in the cultural fiesta. Today’s newsletter is a learning I learnt from one of the judges.
I asked how to face criticism from people and focus on my work instead of criticism.
She said the difference between criticism and feedback. When people just point out things from your work, it’s criticism. I’ll tell you an example.
I write newsletters. Whenever people say I don’t like your writing style, why do you talk about learnings, do something different, why do you go to different meetups, etc? They just point out mistakes in a fast-speed tone. They are not giving actual feedback to me. And by the tone, you can understand that they are not of any use to you. But when someone says something like this, just pause for a while, and reflect that this is feedback and if it will be beneficial to you or not.
Here’s the example she gave me about her acting. Whenever she is performing on the stage, 50% of the audience like what she did and the other 50% didn’t like her show. Instead of focusing on people who liked it, also talk to people who didn't like it and take feedback on why they didn’t like it, how to improve, etc. You cannot please everyone. They can tell because of her facial expression they didn’t like it or because of her low tone they lost interest in watching. You can analyze it, learn from it and improve on it
