Hi, I'm Pranav
Every Friday, I share my process, thoughts, stories, ideas, and weekly recommendations. We're a community of 160+ curious people reading these newsletters.
On 12th March, Sahil Bloom was in Delhi on a panel discussion with Ankur Warikoo. It happened in Bharat Mandapam. It was one of the best sessions ever.
It was like a dream come true to see Sahil in person. I had been reading his content on Twitter and his newsletter and watching his YouTube channel, but seeing him out off-camera, was just amazing.
If you don’t know Sahil, he is a founder of two ventures, SRB Fund and SRB Holdings.
He also writes a newsletter called ‘The Curiosity Chronicle’ He writes about growth and decision-making in business, finance, startups, and technology. He also writes ‘The Friday Five, a weekly newsletter with five ideas curated to spark curiosity headed into the weekend.
He is great on Twitter too. He writes about a lot of great things on it and has 1 Million followers. I recommend a lot, do follow him on Twitter. You’ll learn a lot.
In this newsletter, I’ll tell you my 6 takeaways from the conversation between Sahil and Ankur Warikoo.
Motivation is a trap, get out of it by building systems: Motivation is like caffeine. It gives instant energy but later crashes very badly. Sahil says to have the right system in place to not rely on motivation. He recommends the ABC system:
A: Best Goal (Exercise for 1 hour every day)
B: Base Goal (Exercise for 20 to 30 minutes)
C: Downside Goal (Do light exercises or go for a walk)What you want in life, is on the other side of boredom: Everything in the start is boring. Anything is not simple or easy. If big successful things were easy to do, everyone would have done it. The meaning and success that we want, is on the other side of doing what is painful and uncomfortable.
Casey Neistat says it nicely:
Self-awareness is the key: If you don’t know your weaknesses postponing to reflect on them doesn’t help. You should know what you can do and what you can’t. It gets easier to focus on your expertise faster and delegate what you don’t know. For example, Sahil doesn’t like managing people. This has helped him build his business.
We should chase impact and money will follow: Wealth is created when you deliver an enormous amount of value. We should focus on creating a positive impact in the world in whatever way we can. This way money will follow.
Never stop learning: Learning is everywhere. I remember the character ‘Rancho’ from 3 Idiots. For those who haven’t seen the movie (you have missed a great movie🤦♂️), he thinks out of the box and is disliked by all his collage proffers. He gets kicked out of one of the classes and he sits in some other class saying “You are getting knowledge everywhere. Just grab it”. I noticed Sahil taking notes while in conversation with Ankur on the stage. He is always in constant learning mode.
The key to growth is taking immediate action: Whatever you have learned through books, or any conversations, act on it at the earliest or you’ll forget it and procrastinate. Taking small actions helps in creating the ripples and not letting us forget the learning.
