A few days back I had some issues with the wifi and it was off for a day. Due to that both mobile phone and laptop were out of use.
At first, I stared at my bookshelf and admired it. I realized that there are many books that I haven’t started reading it. Then I started being a bit restless that I don’t have YouTube to watch or Twitter to scroll. All my work was pending.
Then I thought, let’s try being in the situation and see how people 50 years ago lived without the internet.
In the evening, as I was staring at my bookshelf, I realized I didn’t read fiction books in a long time. As a small child, I loved listening to stories and reading story books and comic books. Tinkle and Amar Chitra Katha were my favorites. But I didn’t read many books after the age of 10-11, but in 2020 I found back my interest in reading books. But I read only non-fiction/self-help. But on the bookshelf, I saw a storybook of Akbar and Birbal. I thought I should read it. Interestingly I started loving fiction.
Also, I went to walk outside without watching a video or listening to a podcast. Boredom and being with ourself is really important.
Last year while I was reading Jay Shetty’s book ‘Think Like a Monk’, I was watching his podcasts on YouTube. I came across a podcast by Tom Bilyeu where he interviewed Jay. Since Jay was a monk and had studied the Bhagwat Geeta, he says something about detachment. He says that “Detachment is not about you own nothing. Detachment is that nothing owns you.”
So I realized I shouldn’t be completely dependent on my laptop, books can be alternatives
